OAKDALE
A two-vehicle collision Sunday morning on Patterson Road killed one driver
and left the other with major injuries, the California Highway Patrol
reported Monday.
The driver of a 1998 Toyota Camry was eastbound on Patterson Road east of
Langworth Road about 11:40 a.m. when he attempted to pass a three-axle truck.
The Camry driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, failed to see a
2003 Chevrolet Tahoe approaching in the westbound lane west of Crane Road,
said CHP Officer John Martinez. He pulled directly into its path and the two
vehicles hit head-on.
The Tahoe, driven by 23-year-old Dustin Kyle Hutcheson of Modesto, continued
off the north side of roadway and came to a stop on the dirt shoulder,
Martinez said. Hutcheson suffered major injuries and was transported to
Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.
The impact pushed the Camry backward, Martinez said, and the car rotated and
came to rest in the westbound lane. It became engulfed in flames, Martinez
said, and the driver died at the scene.
Hutcheson was traveling 50 to 55 mph, said Martinez, and drugs or alcohol do
not appear to be factors in the collision.
The truck being passed by the Camry driver was not involved in the crash.
The Camry driver and Hutcheson were alone in their vehicles, Martinez said.
