I am a postdoc in a good public university, I have been working in a small
lab
for almost 3 years now. My boss is okay to me, but I don't like his style
of managing people (especially to his postdocs). He is a control freak, he
likes to know every detail of our work.
I have got some decent publications: first author of a CNS paper (the first
one in the two co-first authors, adding the second co-author was just a
political compromise, because I was too new to fight with the boss and the
second co-author), another paper (also a first author) on journal with 10+
IF (something like JCB, PNAS, or Molecular Cell). I have a third paper
upcoming, hopefully it will be accepted by JCB soon. So I'm going to have
three first-authored publications by the end of 2011, and I was thinking of
applying for faculty position or another postdoc position in a hot field
like RNA sequencing, or single-molecular dynamics(?). I want to develop/
learn skills that are unique for me to find a faculty position - hard?
My boss is not so supportive for my idea of seeking professorship now, as he
wants me to keep me working for him, other postdocs in the lab do not
produce as much as I do - I work my ass off but other postdocs enjoy life
much more. On another hand, I am not sure whether I am ready to find a
faculty position, not because I don't have vision for my future research
subject, but because I don't quite like the classical cell biology/
biochemistry techniques that I have been doing all the time, I want to learn
or develop something new to expand my skills and hopefully develop a new
field for my future research life. This is why I am pondering upon applying
to a big bull lab who studies hot subjects.
So I want to hear your suggestions or advice, from a professor's perspective
, about what I should do in my next step. Thanks for any reply.
