问一下大家：
ph.d program committee member,但不是老板，算不算是独立推荐人（从来没有和自己
发过文章）？已经拿到推荐信了，想在petition letter里面搞一个scholars's
support, 但就是不知道算不算是独立推荐人呢？

Is there an official definition about "independent"? I feel this is very
confusing.
What about some people I met through conferences and occasionally Emailed
since then, but never worked together?
What about some expert in my field I have contacted with but I never meet
him?
What about the program manager of my funding agency? I never met but for
sure he knows my work.-:)

use common sense... io doesn't know you occasionally contacting someone... a
nd you don't have to mention it... and for being in the same school, it's re
ally to connect some one to you even you don't know him, isn't it?
there is no so called "independent" definition, all is just common sense...

那就是说petition letter里面，如果我在contribution里面弄个“My scholarly
contribution of major significance in the field has been demonstrated by
scholars in the field”
最好还是用independent scholars，对吗？这一段里面，就连自己的博士老板的评价也最好不要用，对吗？
照这样子的话，我的independent letter才两封，并且都还是杂志社的，感觉好寒碜哦
。。。。

是不是独立的，看你推荐信是怎么写的。如果不是同一单位又没有依据可查，你说是那
就是了。

Do not know much. For my case, I don't specifically mention "independent" at
all, but just honestly introduced how we knew each other, like "I listened
to his presentation..." "He emailed me to discuss a question and then I got
to know his research..." "I read his paper..." etc.It seems there are no
rigid definition and there are no requirements for independent or not, but
the IO can have a feeling for the "independence" which maybe more sound.

如果有书面证据证明是 committee 里的 "Independent member" 那应该可以算，最好
不是同校
