ok, here are my closing procedures. I live in MA, I close my poor mostly at
the end of Sep, although it could be sooner. My procedures apply to my in-
ground vinyl liner pool. I assume other types of pools are similar.
IMPORTANT: pool repairs are expensive! you have to be very careful, don't
rush, if you don't understand the steps, don't do it. you may ruin your pool
permanently!
In summary:
1. add 4 gal shock and 16 oz algeacide, and circulate
2. drain water to a few inches below the returning sprouts
3. cover your pool
4. disconnect and drain all equipment (pump, filter, feeder etc)
5. add antifreeze to the in-ground lines, 1 gal per line

** Step 0: Preparation
you need to reserve a weekend for closing your pool. I did most closing all
by myself, but this year, my dad helped me putting on the cover.
you need to buy the below supplies for pool closing:
1. a case (4x 1gal bottles) liquid shock; my pool is 32x16, this is what I
needed, if you have a larger pool, buy more. 1 case here costs about $16
2. a bottle of algeacide (32oz), cost about $25
3. 2 bottles (2x 1 gal) pool antifreeze, $5 per bottle

** Step 1: add chemicals and circulate
- balance the water, make sure everything is in normal ranges
- if possible, vacuum the pool to make the bottom clean
- when there is no direct sunlight, say after 4:00PM, pour 4x liquid shock
into the pool
- add half bottle (16 oz) of algeacide
- keep the pump running for at least an hour or two
- while the water is circulating, use brushes to brush the walls, and the
bottom, use net to get all leaves out.

** Step 2: Draining the pool water
- once the pool is clean and the chemicals are well mixed, you may start
draining the pool
- turn off your pump, backwash your filter (if sand filter) or clean the
filter (DE filter, like mine)
- turn the filter's drain valve to ON, let all water drained from the filter
- set the chlorine feeder to OFF
- turn on the pump, let the water drain from the filter drain
- drain the water until 3-4 in below the returning sprouts (not the skimmer!
).
- starting this year, I add a plug at each of the returning sprout to
prevent water getting into the line during winter.
when the water level drops to about 1cm above the skimmer opening, your pump
may lose prime because air can get into the pump. I stopped my pump at this
point, and then use two short segments of hose (1m each, from my pool
vacuum). one end of the hose connect to the skimmer drain, the other end is
put inside the pool. this allows me to drain below the skimmer level.
be very careful! don't let the open-end of the hose drift! it can easily
suck on your liner and, if leave for long, can damage your liner.
my trick is to tie a knot using the hose, this way, it won't turn back to
the pool wall. a picture of the knot is attached.
if you don't feel comfortable doing this. you can buy a submersible pump

draining the pool can take half to 1 hour, depends on your pump set up. don'
t drain too much water, you want to keep your pool pressurized.

** Step 3: Putting on safety cover
- remove all ladders
- put on the safety cover following the instructions,
- make sure all springs are loaded to its desired range, if too tight or too
lose, adjust the straps

** Step 4: Dissemble your pump, filter and chlorine feeder
- if those are outdoor, you need to disconnect them
- drain all the water from each one of them - filter, pump, feeder etc
- for my DE filter, I will open it and wash the interior with a garden hose
- leave them outside to dry for a day or two before moving them to the
garage or a shed

** Step 5: Add antifreeze to the pool lines
- once you remove all the equipment, you should see two pipes: a pipe
connects to the skimmer, and a pipe connects to the returning jet
- if you have a shop vac, blow the water out, or suck the water out as much
as you can
- add 1 gal pool antifreeze for each line
You are done!
during winter months, you may check water level a few times. if you have too
much rain, the water may raise above the returning jet, you may have to
drain again. Because I plugged the returning jet this year, I hope the
antifreeze won't get diluted even the water level goes above the sprout
openings.
the nearby pool company owner told me to pour another 2gal shock after
thanksgiving for best results, but I did not always follow.
if you don't have a good cover, go get one! it is important to have a good
cover. I used a tarp in the first year, and it creates lots of damages to my
pool :( I regretted it very much.
