准妈一枚,刚读了Baby Bargins,总结了写要点跟jms分享~
1.Crib: check/tight screws every month;(刚开始这部分没做笔记,只记得这一条
了。。。)
2.Bedding(pp.131-132):
•Make sure the crib sheets snugly fit the mattress; shrink issue;
sheets with all around elastic. Be sure to wash it several times
according to the directions and see if it correctly fits your crib. If
not, return it to the store.
•No soft bedding in the crib. Put your infant on her back when she
sleeps; don’t put pillows, comforters or other soft bedding or toys
inside a crib (pp132).
•Safest: avoid using any blankets in a crib and put baby in a blanket
sleeper and t-shirt for warmth. If using blanket, it should only come up

5. Maternity & Nursing
•a. Maternity bras, 2 in each size; sleeping bras (more support, and
hold nursing pads for breast milk leak); 2, ; underpants, 8;
•b. Nursing bras: well-made, high quality, fit; avoid under wire bras;
better buy 1-2 at 8th month, won’t change much then;
•c. Nursing pads: disposable; Lansioh, then J&J, Berber, and curity;
Soothies from Lansinoh to cool and soothe painful nipples;
•d. Nursing clothes: not necessary; or buy a nursing camisole or tank
top (walmart brand camisole)
6. Feeding
•Pump: do not purchase a used breast pump, contamination issue; re-use own
breast pump for another child is okay;, just replace the tubing and
collection bottles;
•Storage bags: Lansinoh best; Medela, mothers milk mate;
7. Formula:
•Soy formula is different from soymilk;
•Babies should never be on low-iron formula unless instructed by a
pediatrician.
•Check for expiration date;
•Tap-water with <.3ppm a="" filter="" fluoride="" is="" of="" osmosis="" reverse="" with="">okay to mix formulr; othersize, use purified, demineralize, deionized,
distilled or reverse osmosis filtered water.
•Ask your pediatrician for free samples.
•Child is usually ready for whole milk at one yo; so don’t need
toddler formula;
•Toddler should only be drinking about two cups a day of whole milks;
and they need the fat in whole milk for brain development.

•You’ll give the baby sponge baths for the first few weeks, until the
belly button area heals;
•Consider Dove or Cetaphil bar soap if there is a history of allergies
or skin problems in the family;
•Potty seat: floor models (Fisher Price Preciious Planet Potty);
inserts (baby bjorn toilet trainer);
•Get a diaper pail using regular kitchen trash bags; but they will
stink more frequently; than the one s that use special deodorized plastic.
•Brand: diaper dekor; diaper genie II/elite by playtesx;
•Wipe warmers not necessary;
•humidifier: clean it regularly; Crane ee-5310 or similar; Air-o-swiss
7135 best;
•baby monitor: audio and video monitors are not encrypted, so pay
attention to privacy. (pp340);
•Play yards: don’t buy a second-hand or used one; check the weight
limit;

11. Baby proofing:
•no baby walkers;
•don’t get baby used to watching TV, they need active not passive
learning;
•throw away pacifier at 6th mo;
•avoid ear thermometer, not reliable (infant fever above 100.3 is
serious);
•the best way to clean baby teeth is to wipe with wash clothes twice a
day;
•sippy cups promote teeth decay;
•hanging mobiles are only for babies before 5 mo old; choking hazard;
•Safety gates are needed at stairs (KidCo’s Safeway Gate, $60), no
baby zones (soft gates: Evenflo’s Crosstown Pressure Mounted Soft Gate, $33
-$40); play areas( North States Superyard XT Gate Play Yard $50-70) window/
fireplaces(Guardian Angel, KidGo’ HeartGate);
•Toys: check for age appropriate labels; make sure stuffed animals
have sewn eyes; beware of ribbons; make sure toys have no strings longer
than 12 inches; wooden toys should have non-toxic finished; battery
compartments should have a screw closure; dont leave the baby to play with
crib toys unsupervised; do not use walkers;
•Baby first aid kit: Acetaminophen (Tylenol); Children’s ibuprofen (
Motrin); children’s Benadryl(allergy); antibiotic ointment; baking soda (
great for rashes); calamine location to relieve itching; a good lotion (
unscented and non=medicated); measuring spoon or cup for liquid medicine;
petroleum jelly to lubricate rectal thermometers; plastic bandages like band
-aids; saline nose drops; tweezers; a card with the number for poison
control 800.222.1222 national; thermometer; do not use cough and cold meds.

12. Car Seat:
•One size does not fit all cars, check carseatdata.org;
•Recalls: sign up for a recall email list on Recalls.gov;
•Watch the weight limit, and also the height limit;
•Infant car seat -> convertible -> booster seat (combo or belt-
positioning); all-in-one is not good;
•Do not put child in a bulky coat or snowsuit when sitting in a safety
seat. for warmth, consider a seat cover-up of the seat.
•Check if the pad cover machine-washable, and check if you can wash
the harness.
•light weight, light colored fabric pads are better than heavier
weight, dark fabrics, otherwise hot in summer.
•Watch for exposed metal buckles and hardware, hot in summer, burn
risk. Get one with a buckle cover or no exposed metal.
•Safety: never buy a used car seat; get your seat safety checked,
nhtsa.dot.gov has a national listing of fitting/inspection stations, and
recalls; don’t trust level indicator; forget about car seat add-ons,
potential hazards in an accident; height limit: it’s safe to use a seat
until your child’s head is 1” below the top of the seat or their shoulders
exceed the top harness slot; installation: put your knee in the seat and
push down with your full weight while you tighten the seat belt or LATCH
strap; keep your child rear facing as long as possible; car seat in the back
seat; register your car seat with manufacturer in case of recall; check for
vehicle’s ower’s manual which may have installation instruction;

•don’t get baby used to watching TV, they need active not passive
learning;
•throw away pacifier at 6th mo;
•avoid ear thermometer, not reliable (infant fever above 100.3 is
serious);
•the best way to clean baby teeth is to wipe with wash clothes twice a
day;
•sippy cups promote teeth decay;
•hanging mobiles are only for babies before 5 mo old; choking hazard;
•Safety gates are needed at stairs (KidCo’s Safeway Gate, $60), no
baby zones (soft gates: Evenflo’s Crosstown Pressure Mounted Soft Gate, $33
-$40); play areas( North States Superyard XT Gate Play Yard $50-70) window/
fireplaces(Guardian Angel, KidGo’ HeartGate);
•Toys: check for age appropriate labels; make sure stuffed animals
have sewn eyes; beware of ribbons; make sure toys have no strings longer
than 12 inches; wooden toys should have non-toxic finished; battery
compartments should have a screw closure; dont leave the baby to play with
crib toys unsupervised; do not use walkers;
•Baby first aid kit: Acetaminophen (Tylenol); Children’s ibuprofen (
Motrin); children’s Benadryl(allergy); antibiotic ointment; baking soda (
great for rashes); calamine location to relieve itching; a good lotion (
unscented and non=medicated); measuring spoon or cup for liquid medicine;
petroleum jelly to lubricate rectal thermometers; plastic bandages like band
-aids; saline nose drops; tweezers; a card with the number for poison
control 800.222.1222 national; thermometer; do not use cough and cold meds.

12. Car Seat:
•One size does not fit all cars, check carseatdata.org;
•Recalls: sign up for a recall email list on Recalls.gov;
•Watch the weight limit, and also the height limit;
•Infant car seat -> convertible -> booster seat (combo or belt-
positioning); all-in-one is not good;
•Do not put child in a bulky coat or snowsuit when sitting in a safety
seat. for warmth, consider a seat cover-up of the seat.
•Check if the pad cover machine-washable, and check if you can wash
the harness.
•light weight, light colored fabric pads are better than heavier
weight, dark fabrics, otherwise hot in summer.
•Watch for exposed metal buckles and hardware, hot in summer, burn
risk. Get one with a buckle cover or no exposed metal.
•Safety: never buy a used car seat; get your seat safety checked,
nhtsa.dot.gov has a national listing of fitting/inspection stations, and
recalls; don’t trust level indicator; forget about car seat add-ons,
potential hazards in an accident; height limit: it’s safe to use a seat
until your child’s head is 1” below the top of the seat or their shoulders
exceed the top harness slot; installation: put your knee in the seat and
push down with your full weight while you tighten the seat belt or LATCH
strap; keep your child rear facing as long as possible; car seat in the back
seat; register your car seat with manufacturer in case of recall; check for
vehicle’s ower’s manual which may have installation instruction;
•Brand: infant car seat: Graco SnugRide 35 >Chicco KeyFit 30 > others,
or directly go for convertible for tight budget; Convertible: Britax
Boulevard 70 CS > Britax Marathon > First Year True Fit/Sunshine Kids Radian
65 >Cosco Scenera/Evenflo Titan Elite.
•Booster Seats: child from 40-80 lbs, lees than 4’9” (generally age
4~8) needs a booster seat.; brand review pp440~460.
•When to use the auto’s safety belts: when over 4’9” and can sit
with his back straight against the back seat cushion, with knees bent over
the seat’s edge.

leave baby asleep unattended in a stroller; the brakes shouldn’t be trusted
