On February 11, 2014, CTIA-The Wireless Association adopted six standards on
unlocking into the CTIA's Consumer Code for Wireless Service. Participating
wireless service providers will implement at least three of these six
standards by May 11, 2014, and all of these standards by February 11, 2015.
Contact your mobile wireless service provider. Devices can be unlocked with
unlock codes or other software updates provided to you by your provider.
Some providers will complete the unlocking process in-store, others will
unlock your device remotely and automatically.
Tablets and other mobile devices can be locked to networks. The new
standards cover mobile wireless devices, including tablets. You should check
with your service provider to see if your mobile device is locked and what
terms and conditions you have agreed to.
I tried to unlock a postpaid (out of contract) Verizon iPhone 4S on February
1, 2015. At first, Verizon said that phone is unlocked for international
use only. Representative at Apple gave the same story.
Then I challenged them with this FCC letter. They switched me to a manager
who claimed that he just digitally unlocked the phone from his end.
User need to connect the 4S phone to Itune V10.6 or higher to unlock. May
need to do a full reset of the phone. I need to image windows prior to
installing Itune. Let's see if this will do the trick.
Key point to remember is that effective February 11, 2015, all US carriers
must unlock your US phone if you are a current or former customer provided
that you are out of contract and in good standing. Do not let the bum at
Verizon tell you that your Verizon phone cannot be unlocked in the US.
Apple is also in bed with Verizon to promote this scam so they can keep you
tethered to the more expensive wireless network. They gave me some BS excuse
about how the internal antenna is not configured for another carrier
frequency!
