"24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS Art & 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS Sports
Last year, Sigma’s CEO admitted that the 24-70mm f/2.8 EX and 70-200mm f/2.
8 EX had to be updated. At this stage, and given how important these zooms
are in a lens lineup, it makes little doubt that both are in development.
Canon, Tamron and even Tokina have announced/updated their own 24-70mm f/2.8
recently. Sigma should follow suit.
Mr. Yamaki also expressed how he was impressed with the optical qualities of
the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM. I presume the goal is to make a lens just
as good, with stabilization to boot.
As for the 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports, it is probably on the roadmap
for 2016.
85mm f/1.4 DG Art & 135mm f/2 DG Art
People started to request a 85mm f/1.4 Art as they discovered how sweet Art
lenses were – no matter the existence of a good 85mm f/1.4 lens in the
lineup. The Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 did nothing else than strengthen the
phenomenon. Now that the 85mm f/1.4 EX doesn’t draw much attention anymore,
a new version is needed.
Sigma may or may not have adjusted the priority of the 85mm Art accordingly.
In any case, improving upon the 85mm EX takes time and resources. I didn’t
expect a 85mm Art to come at CP+, and I’m still not sure that it will hit
the market in 2015.
Crucially, a 135mm f/2 was clearly mentioned by the CEO as an important
addition to the lineup. That was a while ago, but since Sigma started to
build a set of fast prime lenses, I see no reason why they would overlook
this key focal length.
So which lens will appear first, the 85 or the 135? Impossible to say, and
at this time, Sigma themselves may not even know.
500mm f/4.5 DG OS Sports
An OS Sports update to the 500mm f/4.5 EX would certainly be warmly welcomed
, but I don’t believe such a lens will be announced this year, unless Sigma
has been working on it for a long time.
12-24mm f/2.8 DC Art & 50-150mm f/2.8 DC OS Sports
Whenever an APS-C lens comes, it should be either the rumored ultra wide-
angle zoom, or a replacement to the 50-150mm f/2.8 EX DC OS.
There’s no rumor for the latter, but its (early) disappearance leaves a gap
in this range. Sigma may have something nice up their sleeves here.
The 12-24mm f/2.8 DC is not written in stone either, it’s just that a
patent supports it. A 10-20mm f/2.8 DC would be more interesting in my
opinion.
14mm f/4 DN Art
Sigma designed a 14mm f/4 lens. Well, it is fixed, but at least it exists!
So now that most of the work is done, what could refrain Sigma from adding
it to the DN lineup?
I’ll speculate and say that releasing it as a stand-alone lens could take
sales from the dp0 Quattro, since it is a very strong selling point of this
camera. We’ll see…
No news about other potential DN lenses.
A “unique lens”
Hinted by Kazuto Yamaki. Intriguing, isn’t it? We’ll discuss what it could
be in a future post.
sd1 Quattro
The sd1 Quattro (unofficial moniker) is “not close but not too far either”
. Unless something goes unexpected, we’ll probably see it at the CP+ show
in 2016.
Also, we have a new line of filters, a new line of lenses, and a new DSLR is
coming. It makes sense to introduce a new flashgun (at least one) along
with the latter. Sigma’s current flashes are a bit long in the tooth."
