where to retire?
do you have kid(s)?
If retiring in SF, NYC, LA and two kids, you actually need $3M assets to
live a good life.
If no kids and move to 3rd-tier Chinese city or even South East Asia, $500K
cash plus some $300K+ in retirement/SS should be quite enough. Almost every
Chinese American came as a graduate student should achieve this asset level
easily around age 50s. ($20K household saving per year x 25 years, not
counting investment gains, so it is easy)
For each kid you have, prepare $200K more for their post high school life (
age 18-30).
