动辄看到上千份申请,或者申了几年都没申上.挺不理解的是,看那些faculty的水平很多
也就是一般般.这是为啥呢?
还有一个疑问,很多postdoc的publication都跟那些申上professor的差不多,是什么决
定了谁做postdoc,谁做professor呢?

Epidemiology of Aging Training Program: Pre and Postdoctoral Positions

Applications are invited for 2011-2012
The aging of the United States population highlights the need for research
on diseases and disabilities that affect older persons. The objective of
this advanced training program (Dr. Jay Magaziner, Program Director) is to
train pre- and postdoctoral fellows to conduct independent and original
research in the epidemiology of aging, with an emphasis on the prevention of
late life disability and functional decline. The program emphasizes four
broad areas where training faculty have extensive gerontologic research
experience and ongoing projects: musculoskeletal epidemiology,
neuroepidemiology, genetic epidemiology, and the epidemiologic study of long
-term care for chronic diseases.
The training program is designed to enable trainees to master a core
curriculum in epidemiology and biostatistics, become knowledgeable about the
basic biological and psychosocial processes of aging which are fundamental
to gerontology, become expert in at least one substantive area relevant to
the prevention of disability and functional decline in the elderly, learn to
contribute to a research team under the supervision of a primary mentor
expert in a substantive area and a secondary mentor expert in epidemiology
and/or biostatistics, and demonstrate the capacity to conduct independent,
original research.
In addition to the many interdepartmental relationships within the School of
Medicine and the University of Maryland Baltimore campus, our location in
the Baltimore-Washington area maximizes opportunities for collaboration with
government agencies, health care institutions and life science industries.
The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health is a national leader in
funded research.

OPT/H1 期间claim $5000 treaty (8833),file 1040，resident，税表是不是一般得寄
到德州的那个non-resident中心？还是按1040的要求寄？

的差不多,是什么决
除了那些特别突出的，中间的candidates在record上是差不多的。但位置
就那么多，几个人里只能被挑中一个。实力很重要，背景和运气也很重要。

申吧。申到了就是容易，没申到就是难。别人怎么样，和你基本没关系。

所以有太多因素决定的。
远远不只是publication。
publication经常只是敲门砖。

如果拿pedigree、pubs这些硬指标先排个序的话，顶尖的和垫底的这些人变数都不大，
变数大的在中间。
对于中间这些人，match与否、会不会包装自己、面试的经验和技巧、还有性格态度这
些就很关键了，这几点加一起的作用接近与决定性。
另外，美国人普遍会比较占便宜。我们专业老美当faculty的人里颇有些研究水平很差
的，老中那么差的没见过。

老美特别是少数民族，那是有先天优势的。

是啊，对个人来说，选一个好的方向很重要（这个要碰运气）。
有能力给人留下好印象，在面试非常重要，这个不是record
上能看出来。
在很多专业，老美已经是minority了。:)

些人变数都不大，
有性格态度这
