Oct. 23 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner said the
country has a special responsibility to support the dollar, reaffirming a
policy to back a strong U.S. currency.
Geithner declined to comment on quantitative easing or Federal Reserve
policy. He said it was important that China continues with “very promising
” yuan gains, and that the Asian nation played a “very constructive” role
in this week’s Group of 20 nations talks in South Korea.
He spoke in Gyeongju, South Korea today after a gathering of finance
ministers and central bank governors of the Group of 20 nations.

Geithner: Results Key For G-20; US Has Strong-Dollar Policy
GYEONGJU, South Korea -(Dow Jones)- U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner
said Saturday he was "optimistic" about proposals for global economic
policies agreed to by the Group of 20 industrial and developing nations, but
that results would be key.
"The test is what countries actually do" after they agreed to cooperate on
currencies and reduce external imbalances, Geithner told a news conference
after a two-day meeting of G-20 finance ministers and central bankers in
Gyeongju, South Korea.
The G-20 vowed to avoid "competitive devaluation" of their currencies while
curbing their current-account surpluses and deficits, in a bid to defuse a
potential "currency war" and set the stage for more balanced global growth.
But the group didn't announce specific targets for achieving their goal of "
rebalancing" global growth away from an over-reliance on U.S. consumers
buying imported goods.
"We look forward to working together in the coming weeks and months to try
to put more flesh on the skeleton" of the G-20's current-account goals,
Geithner said. The Gyeongju meeting was meant to prepare for a G-20 summit
Nov. 11-12 in Seoul.
Asked about accusations that the U.S. was itself at fault for policies that
have weakened the dollar, Geithner said, "It is the policy of the US to
support a strong dollar...and we recognize the special responsibilities we
have to help contribute to global financial stability" as a country with a
key reserve currency.
