About the group
The group led by Prof. Hryhoriy Polshyn is investigating emergent electronic phenomena in 2D materials https://polshynlab.com . The group uses advanced nanofabrication techniques in conjunction with graphene and other van der Waals materials to make devices that host clean and tunable 2D electronic systems. When cooled down to millikelvin temperatures, these 2D systems host a plentitude of interaction-driven electronic phases that manifest fascinating properties. The group uses electronic transport measurements and other experimental probes to reveal the nature of these emergent electronic states and search for new states with exotic topological properties.
About Prof. Polshyn
Prof. Polshyn obtained his PhD at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2017, where he developed a new mode of magnetic force microscopy and applied it to investigate the dynamics of vortices in mesoscopic superconducting structures. After completing his PhD, Prof. Polshyn joined the Department of Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara as a postdoctoral researcher. There he focused on investigating interaction-driven electronic phenomena in graphene heterostructures. In particular, he made significant contributions to the investigation of the superconductivity and intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall effect in graphene moiré heterostructures. The results of his work have been published in Science, Nature, Nature Physics, PRL, Nano Letter, and other high-rank journals. Since 2022, Hryhoriy Polshyn has been leading his lab at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria, where he became an Assistant Professor.
The group has openings for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers:
Graduate students – candidates with good knowledge of General and Solid State Physics are encouraged to apply. Previous experience in experimental lab work is strongly desired. Please send your CV, transcripts, and a cover letter describing your motivation and experience in research or technical projects. ISTA has a centralized admission process to graduate school. More information about the ISTA graduate school can be found here https://phd.pages.ista.ac.at .
Postdoctoral researchers – candidates with experience in nanofabrication, low-temperature measurements, and 2D materials are encouraged to apply. Please include your CV and a cover letter describing your interests and previous research experience.
The candidates are expected to communicate effectively in English. If you are interested, please send your CV and other application materials to [email protected] .
About the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA)
The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) is a PhD granting research institution dedicated to cutting-edge research in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry&Materials, Computer Science, and other disciplines. The working language of ISTA is English. The campus of ISTA is in the historic city of Klosterneuburg, on the picturesque outskirts of Vienna – which has been voted as one of the most livable cities in the world. Vienna's beautiful downtown and the Vienna International airport are conveniently within easy reach by public transportation. ISTA was established in 2006 by the Federal Government of Austria with the ambitious aim to facilitate world-class basic research and train the next generation of scientific leaders. Although ISTA is less than two decades old, it currently has 69 research groups supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure with the plans to grow further to 90 groups in 2026. ISTA has a diverse and international population, with students, scientists, and staff from 72 different countries.
All PhD and postdoctoral positions are fully funded and include an internationally-competitive salary and full social security coverage. The PhD program at ISTA features flexibility: there is a centralized admission process, and the incoming students are expected to rotate in at least three research groups in the first year. PhD students are offered an initial 5-year employment contract, with a one-year extension possible. For more details about the PhD program at ISTA, please visit :
