廖碧兰油画：我成长的故事 Dragon’s Daughter - 1

The Window is the introductory piece to my series of over a dozen paintings about the Chinese culture and Chinese Cultural Revolution. The self-portrait begins my series, and my journey out of chaos and into the clarity of my American dream. I am standing in front of the window of my small second-floor apartment on Heritage Hill in Grand Rapids, Michigan. At the time I was working on my Master of Fine Arts degree at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University. The images surrounding
the window and me are photographs of my mother, my father, my grandmother, my brother and me, two younger sisters, my aunt, my uncle’s children, and my mother’s half-brothers. On the table is an open book with the photographs of Chairman Mao and Vice Chairman Lin Biao, who betrayed Mao during the Chinese Cultural Revolution.
