Expedia has a very exciting and challenging opening for a Sr. Data Scientist
. We work on the hotel sort algorithm for one the world’s largest travel
site and this is an opportunity to be an anchor member of the core team.
We are looking for someone with advanced training in machine learning and
computer science. You should be the type of person that attends (or wants
to attend) SIGKKD every year and may have competed on a top team in the KDD
cup. You should be very familiar with the current state of the art in
search and ranking algorithm, be knowledgeable of leading algorithms for
boosted decision tree, rankSVM and other techniques related to sorting. You
should also have expert level knowledge of open source tools like R and
Mahout and be able to write your own code.
This is an applied research position, so while you will be given the
flexibility to pursue new and interesting techniques, the main focus will be
in developing production algorithms supporting features of the website.
Responsibilities:
• Propose and lead innovative mathematical approaches for building
hotel sort algorithm
• Perform analyses, design, coding, and model validation in support
of business requirements.
• Generate sorting code that executes in an autonomous production
environment and fully considers error handling, exception conditions, etc.
• Perform unit testing and model validation of analytic routines.
• Document the technical details of your work to improve
collaboration with other team members.
• Guide and mentor other modelers in best practices regarding
methodology (prototype formulation and testing, data mining and
• analysis), as well as implementation (proper documentation,
source control, and coding practices).
• Assess the methodological and functional pros and cons of
implementing third-party products versus building an in-house system when
• facing a business problem.
• Collaborate extensively with stakeholders, program management,
and software development team members to ensure that solutions meet business
needs, permit valid inferences, and have functional feasibility.
Requirements :
• Master’s degree or PhD in machine learning, computer science or
equivalent work experience
• Proficient in one the following languages: Python, Java, C, C++
• 2 to 3 years work experience. Exceptional candidates will be
considered directly from leading graduate programs.
• A passion for data analysis and modeling
• Comprehensive understanding of quantitative methods and extreme
attention to detail.
• Ability to estimate required effort for project objectives and
prioritize work items appropriately
