Mouse released into wild snatched by hawk, ruins good deed (video)
By: David Strege
An unidentified cadet at West Point, no doubt an animal lover, was just
trying to do the right thing when his act of kindness went horribly wrong.
Apparently, a mouse had taken up residency in his barrack. He finally
trapped the little guy he called Whiskers and transported him via trash can
to an open field. He then released the critter, telling it "good luck."
Unfortunately for the mouse, this happened:
The video went viral on Reddit, and many commenters called it a fake, but
many more defended the video as authentic, pointing out that you can
actually see the mouse (or small rat) scamper across the pathway to the area
where the hawk picked it up.
One commenter said, "This is definitely real. I personally know the guy and
saw his Facebook comments about a mouse in his barracks room for the past
couple of days, concluding with a final status update about a hawk swooping
in to snatch the mouse just moments after he had released it. Amazingly,
they caught it on video. This was filmed at the U.S. Military Academy at
West Point, N.Y."
"I feel relieved that he's not going to wake me up in my bed and crawl on my
leg," the Good Samaritan says on the video. "It's kinda sad, it's got to
know me..."
At that moment, the cadet turns around and watches in dismay as the hawk
snatches the mouse and flies away.
"Oh no. Oh no. Nooooo. Are you kidding me? He didn't last five minutes. I'm
a terrible person."
As they say, no good deed goes unpunished. But wait, there's another way to
look at this: One might say he was a Good Samaritan for feeding the hawk.
