I am a university professor, my grammer and my accent are both horrible, but
my students consider me good teacher, lol. I think the key is to think in
English, don't think in Chinese and then translate.
Watch English TV, and imitate the expressions that you think are useful.

people started a second langauge after 12 passed their critical point, they
are subconciously doing translation between their mother language and their
second langauge. You can not avoid thinking Chinese, you jumble CHinses
grammer with English words without being aware of the process. By the way what
you teaching?

这可以说是主流观点吧
不过具体到不同的人还是有这样那样的差异的
人们习得语言的能力千差万别,不管是L1还是L2
现在研究发现L1和L2是在不同大脑功能区处理的

不过这也是可以在一定程度上改变的
比如美国人初学汉语时,用右脑的某一处处理声调
但经过一段时间的学习后,右脑活动减弱,相应地左脑活动加强
这里面虽然还有许多复杂的因素,但说明熟练程度也是伴随着神经系统的改变

Passed the critical period, you cannot learn a language well, that's for sure.
Like I said, I am horribly at grammer, and my accent is obvoius. That's
because I learned English after the critical period. However, it does not
mean you have to always do translation from your native language.
When people think, deep concept structure are what matters. When you learn
English, if you associate English words with those deep structure instead of

还有就是汉语没有各种agreement(包括时态导致的形态变化)
很难与英语建立起对应关系

I largely agree with you. Language features are just surface structures. We
could express the same deep structure (the meaning) with different language
features.
When people learn a foreign language, they may utilize different strategies.
Because developing association with deep structure takes substantial time and
effort, some people may feel it is easier to assoicate foreign words with the
well learned native words for quick mastery in order to cope with tasks such
as exams. But this strategy
