We did find (quite by accident) that Apple may have more reasons behind not installing Flash by default other than the stated reason of ensuring that users always have the most up-to-date version. Having Flash installed can cut battery runtime considerably—as much as 20 percent in our testing. With a handful of websites loaded in Safari, Flash-based ads kept the CPU running far more than seemed necessary, and the best time I recorded with Flash installed was just 4 hours. After deleting Flash, however, the MacBook Air ran for 6:02—with the exact same set of websites reloaded in Safari, and with static ads replacing the CPU-sucking Flash versions. http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2010/11/the-future-of-notebooks-ars-reviews-the-11-macbook-air.ars/3

Any evidence to back up your claim and the so called "figure"? It is well known that Flash implementation on Mac is poor and it will be way better to use quicktime to view the same content.

Nice post. But note that Flash content on Web is everywhere. If they are converted into quicktime format and loaded by quicktime, battery life will be reduced as well.

We did find (quite by accident) that Windows may have more reasons behind not installing Quicktime by default other than the stated reason of ensuring that users always have the most up-to-date version. Having Quicktime installed can cut battery runtime considerably—as much as 33 percent in our testing. With a handful of video ads loaded in Quicktime, those video-base ads kept the CPU running far more than seemed necessary, and the best time I recorded with Quicktime installed was just 4 hours. After deleting Quicktime, however, the MacBook Air ran for 6:02—with the exact same set of ads reloaded in Internet Explorer, and with static ads replacing the CPU- sucking video versions.

Why are people talking about QuickTime? HTML5 video doesn't require QuickTime. HTML5 banner or GIF animations don't require QuickTime. QuickTime is not alternative of Flash.

I don't know how HTML5 video is rendered on Mac. It is supposed to be supported at browser level? However, I intend to believe quicktime is behind Safari to render HTML5 video. Educate me if I have had been wrong :-) I started talking QuickTime since some people tried to convince QuickTime probably has worse performance when playing video compared with Flash. I 99% am sure Flash is not a match to Quicktime about rendering video efficiently on Mac. I remember previously some people claim Flash's poor performance on Mac is Apple's fault - Apple did not release hardware acceleration API to Adobe for implementing Flash on Mac. This is lying since other rendering software not utilizing the acceleration API doesn't exhibit the problems Flash on Mac presents.

Either I got your idea wrong or your text was not what you wanted to say. :-) LZ just said some tests suggested Flash probably caused 20% loss of battery time. And you put out sth like "removing quicktime could save another 30%". Isn't it a comparison?
