And it is not like it is completely drained. The OS/firmware decide when to
shut iPhone down.

There is a hint of that 20% thing in iphone already. If it drop below
20%, the battery is red. That means you are need to charge it ASAP.
Where do you read apple recommend completely drain the battery?
I google "iphone calibrate battery", I did not see much recommend
from apple. People talking about calibrate battery most likely
don't know what they are talking about.
Here is the iphone battery page I found in apple. It match my
understanding of the lithium battery petty well.
e.g. Always 100% full change without discharge is bad for
the battery.

hmmm, seems in the link u posted, at the last para says:
Use iPhone Regularly
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep
the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one
charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely
running it down).

100% charge is not a problem as long as it does not hold
there for very long time. Usually I charge my RC battery the
day before the flight. My RC battery hold up very well even
the abuse I have it them (20C discharge).
But very time battery drop below 20% will hurt the total
capacity, a little at a time.

我的猜想是这样的。确实锂离子电池过度放电会导致寿命减短，所以一般都推荐能充就
充，不要过度放电，反正没有记忆效应。但是另一方面，手机上电池显示是偶尔需要校
正的，不然的话没法正确显示电量。我的笔记本电脑好像就有这个问题，明明电池有电
，但是显示为零。所以苹果的官网推荐一个月来一次满充满放，估计是通过这样来校正
电池管理程序。一个月一次也不至于导致寿命的大幅度缩减。
个人猜测，还请懂行的仔细说说。

That is the same thing as not keep 100% all the time.
What we call cycle the battery. That is for iphone/laptop that
keep in the charging station all the time. If you take
out to use it, I wouldn't worry about it.
But even cycle the battery I would not run down to 3.7 V.
3.75v is the sweat spot. What voltage corresponding to 20%
on iphone. But I will not go below red for my iphone.

Every lithium battery has the same problem, expensive one
and cheap one both hurt capacity when over drain below 3.7v.
If you insist, drain below 20% as you like.
It is your iphone not mine. I do really give a damn.

一直充满的记忆效应是有的，但是没有过度放电那么严重。
而且锂电池的工作电压都是非常准的，这个不大会漂移。
需要校准的是电池的容量，这个是随着使用逐渐减少的。
如果电脑要估计还能用多少分钟，那需要知道总容量。
反正电池充电放电都是根据电压来的。
iphone 4s 漏电这么快我不觉的需要一个月放一次。每天都基本上
在 cycle.
