Many people new to amateur astronomy and the use of
telescopes are coming to this newsgroup seeking advice
on getting their first or second (larger) telescope. Rather
than reply to a flurry of individual threads, it might be
easier and more enlightening to post a series of guiding
thoughts and recommendations from more experienced
amateurs of diverse backgrounds.
Here are my recommendations:
