My car was totaled and I really don't want to buy a Jap car, so I did some
research and got a Jetta TDI 6 speed manual. Not sure why drivers of Jetta
were called WSN by someone on this board, but so be it.
I paid $20800+tax/fee for it. Its invoice is $22866, and MSRP is $23785 (
destination fee included. source: edmunds.com)). I am very happy with it.
First of all, it is fun to drive on local road. It pulls strongly at low to
medium speed because of the huge torque. I often screech the front tires
when starting from stop light(of course, better stickier tire may be quieter
).
Second, it is got great mileage. Its EPA highway mileage is 42, but I think
it is very conservative. My commute was a mix of crowded highway and local
road. I got 38mpg with the first tank of diesel, and 41.5mpg with the second
. Not sure why I got better number with 2nd tank. Maybe the dealer's diesel
is not good (2nd tank was from Shell). I consider myself lead-footed and I
never intentionally drive slowly/smoothly in order to get better gas mileage.
As a comparison, I drove a rental corolla for a week before I got my Jetta.
Same daily route, and the gas millage was ~30mpg. And with it I never felt
any push from the seat back :D
There are some cons. There is a bit or turbo lag, so you need to rev it up a
little. Acceleration at highway speed is not strong. Also the clutch is a
little too much to the right because of the wheel well, but I got used to it.
One more thing, diesel engine is supposed to last longer than gas engine, so
I plan to get 200k miles out my 2013 Jetta TDI :D
