I don't have a tesla, but my Gen2 volt covers my 48-mile commute almost
entirely with electricity.
with cold winters here, my 48-mile trip consumes about 13kWh on average.
When temperature raises above 60F, I got ~11.5kWh for my commute.
including 10% charging loss and 12c/kWh rate in my town, my commute costs me
$1.5.
to compare, assuming your car is 30 mpg, with the current regular gas price
$1.9/gal, a gas car's cost for the 48 mile trip is $3.
so, just fuel cost alone, electric cars are half of the cost, at least in my
area. I am sure gas price will jump up again.
this has not included maintenance cost yet. for BEV, you don't need oil
change at all . my car only requires 1 oil change every 2 years. that saves
both time and cost.

come on, NIH is where most of these people rely on to make their livings.
the NIH money is much bigger, more opportunities, more flexible, less
demanding for reports, plus has less IP restrictions.

If you calculate that way, you will underestimate cost a lot. The car does
not maintain a constant speed but stop and go, it also costs you on waiting
traffic light. Over years, I concluded this formula to truly capture the
cost for driving, it eliminates the dependency on location and traffic
condition, fuel consumption is only depends on how long you drive, because
on high way it cost around 2 gal to drive one hour and on local road you
drive less but waste fuel on waiting, it still consumes around 2 gal. 8$/
hour is quite accurate for me, It like everyday I spend an hour commuting,
it costs roughly 22 hours a month, a bout $176, a little less than I spent
because I also drive on weekends. Maybe a hybrid or electric car can do
better.

electricity consumption, accurate to a single digit, for the entire trip.

driving. that sounds awfully low.
My commute is 70 min total, to use your formula, my car only costs me $1.3/
hour on the road.
In your case, moving to a plugin car is much more meaningful.
by the way, EV has the best efficiency in stop-and-go situations. it
consumes almost nothing at a full stop (only 500W in the case of my car).

我觉得应该算long distance mileage / total mileage 而不是# of long distance
