PhD student position available
Department of Molecular Cell Biology, Leiden University Medical Center, The
Netherlands
Overview of the project and role
We are looking to recruit a PhD student to investigate the role of TGF-
61538; family members in liver fibrosis and cancer. A combination of
molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology and animal model based
techniques will be used. The research project will be performed at the
Department of Molecular Cell Biology, Leiden University Medical Centre under
supervision of Prof. Dr. P. ten Dijke. This project is supported by a Marie
Curie ITN training programme grant from the European Community and involves
multiple laboratories within Europe. The PhD-student is responsible for
planning and performing the experiments and reporting and publishing the
results in scientific journals and international conferences.
The specific aims of the ITN Training programme are to:
• Provide talented early-stage researchers a research training
programme aimed at acquisition of
o state-of-the-art knowledge of the components of the skills spectrum
needed to combat liver fibrosis and cancer , i.e. science and technologies
of basic molecular liver cell biology, drug discovery and delivery systems
and development of preclinical models and (pre)clinical treatment modalities.
o the ability to assimilate the individual components of the skills
spectrum such that they will be able to oversee and in a goal-oriented
manner direct the multisectorial process of combating diseases.
• Improve employability of its trainees in the higher ranks of
academia and industry by enhancing their transferable skills e.g. in writing
, communication, intellectual property management, valorisation and
entrepreneurship.
• Strengthen research cooperation to advance our understanding of
the molecular and cellular mechanisms of disease progression and to
translate this knowledge into drug discovery and treatment modalities.

Description of our Research Group: TGF-β signal transduction in disease.
In our research group we investigate signal transduction pathways of
transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) in heath and disease. TGF- is
a secreted homodimeric protein that regulates numerous responses, such as
proliferation, differentiation, migration and apoptosis. TGF-β is the
prototypic member of a family of 33 structurally related pleiotropic
cytokines. Members of the TGF-β superfamily have crucial roles in
development and tissue homeostasis. We are interested in unraveling
mechanisms by which transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) family members
elicit their multifunctional cellular effects and how perturbation in their
signal transduction pathways contribute to human diseases. The present focus
within our group is on 1) the identification of novel critical regulators
of TGF-β family signaling pathways using functional genetic screens, 2) how
TGF-β specificity and bioavailability is regulated via known (co-)
receptors and ligand binding proteins and 3) interplay with other signaling
pathways. In particular, we study the involvement of TGF-β family members
in the metastasis of cancer cells, tumor angiogenesis and liver disease. We
use 3-dimensional cell culture systems that allow for a functional analysis
of homo- and heterotypic cell-cell interactions in structures that resemble
those found in vivo. Moreover, mouse models are used that mimic diseases
with misregulated TGF-β signaling. Our long term aim is to translate our
findings towards the development of novel treatment modalities.
