I do not mean to frustrate you, but in my mind, it needs much more to get
a top 30 finance ph.d. Remember finance is the favorite major of Americans.
You need very strong recommendations(I think it is the recommendation
letters distinguish you from the application pool).
If you are sure that you can be accepted into your university, and your
university is not bad(top 50?), why not ask the professors in finance
department directly? At least my professor told me better not consider
