看来许多人对金融PHD是干嘛的并没有概念。我的建议：如对金融有兴趣，可读Willam
Sharpe的书Investment。SHARPE老先生是NOBEL PRIZE WINNER。其书文笔极好，深入浅
出，而且附有大量的参考书目，是极佳的入门读物。如果看完了，觉得看明白了，可以
顺着参考书目去看一些papers。如看完PAPER后觉得有想法，觉得自己也能在
Journal of Finance or Journal of Financial Economics 上发文
章， then go for finance PH.D。你会有一个很不错的personal statement。
Otherwise就算了。

What you say makes a lot of sense. However, that classical reading and related
papers are not the representative publications at this stage. Those pioneering
work is not what we do now. We are just mopping the ground created in 60s-80s.
Furthermore, one does not need to go to academic job market after Phd in
Finance. Working in industry is also good, espically if one is doing empirical
Finance. In some Financial companies or divisions, it is faster for a Phd in
Finance to climb the corporate lad

It is just for the starters le. If one has some idea, of course he or she
needs to do more recent literature review. I think the idea is that one should
read journal of finance and journal of financial economics before applying
Ph.D. in finance, especially for those who are already in the US. It is not
terribly useful to come to this board to ask suggestions.
It is right that one does not need to go to academic job market after Ph.D.
But I think the expectation is that you will go to academics.

Totally misleading advice. If your purpose is going to industry, Ph.D is
nothing, MBA is enough. Only those guys who has no confidence use a higher
degree to chase a lower position
On the other hand, only those losser Ph.D who can not find a faculty position
go to industry.

a much-simpler approach is to ask yourself what you want to do
5-10 years from now. If research is of interst to you, go to
a finance program.
Background, for a phd program anyway, isn't that important.
