in IBD, all kinds of majors, I've met engineers, English majors, history
majors, lots of Econ majors, some finance majors (if their undergrad school
has finance)... etc.
But I am only speaking about IBD analysts and associates.

IBD = Investment Banking department, usually refers to people who work in
mergers & acquisition, corporate finance, and some capital market functions.
Like I said, I was referring to undergrad econ majors, they can either be
analysts in IBD, or in research, depends on where they end up.
The analysts I refer to here are NOT those who rate companies, usually, I am
referring to those who work on financial models, and pitch books, and thus
often work long hours every day.

Undergraduates start at analyst level. Most of the investment banking analyst
programs at the investment banks don't require the candidate to have a
business or economics degree. One just has to graduate from an elite school,
be smart, aggressive and a team player. There is nothing complicated with
doing some powerpoints, excels and Word documents.

management analyst program, sales & trading analyst program, and application

不过实际上招的analysts还是以business school under为主。associate
中夜市。绝大部分是mba.

no, they may care about the name of the college, the grade of the under
and the performence in interview, but as far as I know, seldom
do they care about the major when recruiting unders for analysts. Especially
for the corprate finance division. And what the analysts do is not technical,
even a business majored under will find his/her textbooks and course knowledge
useless there.

I wouldn't say they have a prejudice against engineers... I think most of
them, if not all, prefer engineers with a finance/econ concentration or
background. I think an engineer who is well-versed in finance and economics
is a better candidate for them.

Don't know much about industrial engineering.
But operation research is serious science, or engineering. I view it as a
science anyway. It involves a great deal of statistics. In fact, the math
tools you use to model how the passengers arrive at the airport, how the
requirement of spare parts fluctuates over time, etc, are the same tools you
use to model different variables in the financial markets. the IEOR department
of Columbia actually offers a program in financial engineering in which peopl

Totally agree!
FYI, I, among many others, have a background in OR, and I think this has been
an advantage in the financial services industry.
It really depends on the individual, that's all. :)
One can joke all one wants about OR, IE, etc., after all, it's the practical
skills these majors give you that matters at the end.

No offense to the IE or OR majors. It was just a joke from
a previous Mechanical Engineering major and I thought the
IOE part was cute.
