准备今年申请faculty,和老板谈时，老板起初很高兴，也很支持，但是，当进一步谈将
来的研究方向时，他就显得有点含含湖湖，不可捉摸了。是不是老板都不希望自己的
post-doc出去独立呢？因为研究方向类似，将来是同行，有竞争？但是不和老板谈开，
是没办法操作的，真是不知道该如何处理才好。各位faculty版的高人，请站在老板的
位置上，帮我分析分析吧，在这关键的时候，应该怎样处理和老板的关系，才不至于不
伤和气？谢谢指教!

F1/OPT,residence alien, 填的1040表. 2013年前三个月在texas,后面搬到了maryland
.收到了texas原来单位的1042S,享受了treaty.准备好了表格最后是寄到现在马里兰对
应的office( Kansas city ) 还是寄到texas austin的office?

Faculty Position Available in Biomaterials Engineering
Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering, Cornell University
Position: Assistant Professor: Biomaterials Engineering.
Tenure Track.
Location: Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853-5701. The
academic home for this position is the Department of Biological and
Environmental Engineering in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
Responsibilities:
This biological engineering tenure-track position requires a balanced effort
between research (50%) and teaching (50%) on an academic year basis.The
successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized research
program and become a leader in the field of biomaterials engineering.The
department seeks a distinguished and productive junior scholar who shares
our passion for outstanding teaching and advising in the context of a
leading research university with a top-ranked, accredited undergraduate
biological engineering program. Service to the department and university is
expected of all members of the faculty.
The ideal candidate will work in the area of biomaterials engineering with a
focus on biologically-derived materials with broad applications in
biological, environmental, agricultural or food systems. Innovative research
may be focused at the nanoscale, molecular, cellular or organism level.
Examples of possible research emphases include the following areas: bio-
derived and bio-inspired materials and biomaterials engineering based on
self-assembly, biomolecular engineering, and nanobiotechnology. We are
looking for candidates who would excel in the multidisciplinary research
environment which is a hallmark of Cornell University. Publishing in peer-
reviewed journals and securing external funding to support research program
is a major expectation of the successful candidate.
The successful candidate will also support the teaching of core courses at
the undergraduate and graduate level including developing a course that is
explicitly designed to educate students on biomaterials. The department
values excellence in undergraduate and graduate mentoring and is seeking a
candidate that shares these values.
Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline is required with demonstrated
capability and success in developing research and teaching programs at the
interface of engineering and biological sciences.
A strong background in engineering and biology is required and an
engineering degree is preferred.
Continuing with an already strong record of success, the department
especially encourages women and underrepresented minorities to apply for
this position.
Salary: Competitive

Starting Date: Anticipated starting date is January, 2012

yes, you should refill the form if it asked the military question. You can
refill anytime. But do not lie and do your best to make it correct.

谢谢回复。没有NOT也对，我的理解是老板希望自己的Post-Doc比较强些，甚至超过自己，这说明自己的training成功，而且出去作job talk时不至于毁了自己的名声。

关键是不能对老板的饭碗造成威胁。生存总是第一位的，除非老板本身很牛，不担心竞
争，或者快退休了。

自己，这说明自己的training成功，而且出去作job talk时不至于毁了自己的名声。

谢谢回复！一般应该不会造成威胁吧，老板已经是full professor，有很多研究方向。

如果能强过老板很多，比如得个nobel啥的。老板当然愿意了。其他就难说了。

老板要都是这么openminded就好了，他希望你强，当你代表他的时候；你自己单干了，
恐怕还是不希望你比他还强吧，尤其是在同一个领域的时候。

的老板都得象敌人一样互相提防着，这作科研怎么跟打仗似的。那新科AP是否最好都自己另辟跷径，自成一派？但在刚开始时没有以前的工作基础怎么行呢？

是很难，尤其现在市场竞争这么激烈的时候。
我想来想去，在找工作的前一年，拼命开辟新的方向，为将来自己的group铺路；当然
做博后课题的那一部分是你出成果的地方，肯定不可能一下子全部放弃。所以我跟老板
谈的时候，还是比较恳切的，就是说长远来讲，我一定会做跟他不一样的方向，（比如
自己已经着手开辟新的领域了），但是最近的三年恐怕还是要延续部分博后的工作。这
样子，老板应该还是都可以理解的。反正最重要的还是需要他的支持，尤其是开始的几
年，别针尖对麦芒，胳膊还是掰不过大腿。

自己另辟跷径，自成一派？但在刚开始时没有以前的工作基础怎么行呢？

谢谢分享！我想也应该这样，通过开诚布公的交谈，取得老板的理解和支持，争取保持
一种竞争与合作的良性互动关系。事实证明我先前有些顾虑过多，今天上午又和老板进
行了一次谈话，他的态度转变了很多，并表示会帮助我申请，我不知道他将会怎样帮助
，但让我感觉好了很多。
在此也要感谢以上各位对本贴的关注，也祝你们申请AP或funding顺利！
