Jobs is right: 7-inch tablets are going to be a complete failure. However, if he were so confident, why tip off the competitors? Why not keep silence and sit back and watch them fail in smile?
7 inch is good for portable dvd player anyway, but rather rather limited

he needs to assure investors why he doesn't do things. It is not uncommon for competitors NOT to listen to what Jobs says why Apple is sucessful.

yeah, that is what I thought about as well. I think he tried to "scare off" the market.. and try to slow down customer buying the 7"

it won't work small companies are not competing with Apple on the general market, as long as there are small niche share they will go for it. selling ten thousand sets is pretty enough for them

Seven-inch screens are about half size of the ten-inch ones. Probably that makes optimal UI designs closer to a phone instead of a tablet. I think 7-inch does have portability advantage in that it is lighter and may fit large pocket or regular purse. But that's probably not the primary motivation of the coming army of 7-inch androids - I think the primary reason is cost and availability of 10-inch IPS screens. Apple priced iPad very aggressively as they publicly stated, therefore competitors couldn't match iPad in terms of price if they go with 10-inch. Additionally 10-inch screens require bulkier battery. Without an integrative approach from silicon to the OS, they may have a hard time to match the weight of an iPad when targeting similar battery life. All considered, 7-inch looks like a compromise rooted in incompetence rather than superb design. And that is not a recipe for success. (Carrier subsides may change the dynamic, but it's unclear if this is a valid business model for tablets.)

Makes sense. Apple seems to price aggressively when it is the first mover in certain market (iPad and iPhone are not pricey, compared with other Apple products like Mac). Apple's supply chain management department push suppliers very hard to make pricing room.

Supply chain is absolutely important, which explains Tim Cook's prominence in the company. The other important factor is distribution channels. If subside model works well for tablets, the market will be similar to smartphones where carriers play a huge role - Android's success is mostly attributed to Verizon and the nature of cell phone contrasts. But I highly doubt that would be the case. Attacking all important niches/segments is also important. Apple does make different kinds of iPods and Macs. I believe Apple will make a smaller iPad just for people who prefer light weight. When Jobs says something "dead on arrival", "blows", what he really means is like this: "this thing is interesting. but the existing products on the market suck. yet we haven't figured out how to improve it, or we have figured out but not ready to show it".
