I am a student and have been teaching for 3 courses. My evaluation improved
from around 2 to around 4 and to around 4.5. I was doing the best for the
course average (as this course is taught by PHD students, a visiting
professor was teaching too) but still below the school average,which is
above 5.
I teach a new course for this semester. The program coordinator sat in my
class today and requests to take turns with me teaching this course to help
me improve the teaching quality. He talked with the class and got some
feedback: lecture examples are too many, too complicated, the projector
doesn't work well, I didn't call the students sitting on the back, no
passion, low voice, Language barrier, etc.
I built some confidence from the previous teaching experience, but now I
feel that I am knocked down again. I don't know whether the intervention
from the program coordinator is good or not. (Good: help me improve;bad:
student bias against me because two instructors for one course and I am the
rookie) I definitely want to improve my teaching evaluation and I indeed
made some improvement over time, though slowly. The program coordinator
suggests me to speak English all the time even at home. Will it help at all?
Anyone any suggestion please? I thought for some people, the language is
extremely difficult to handle and no way to improve it significantly.
Unfortunately, I am in the business school and the students are very
demanding. Fluent Language is not even enough. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.

从小就是读着他的作品长大的, 悲痛不已啊!
张贤亮(1936-2014)张贤亮生平
张贤亮的父亲曾留学美国,后为国民政府官僚,1949年被关押,后死于狱中。1936年12
月张贤亮出生于南京。1937年12月,日军攻占南京前夕,随家人逃离,幸免于难。1954
年,18岁的张贤亮从北京的高中肄业,前往宁夏贺兰县插队,不久任宁夏省委干部文化
学校教员。张贤亮14岁开始文学创作;1957年因在《延河》文学月刊上发表长诗《大风
歌》而被打为右派,接受劳改、管制、监禁达22年,其间曾外逃流浪,1979年9月获平
反。
1980年任宁夏《朔方》文学杂志编辑,同年加入中国作家协会并重新执笔;曾任宁夏回
族自治区文联主席;1992年在宁夏银川市郊创办镇北堡西部影城,现为其董事长。并任
六届政协全国委员会委员。在1980年代的中国文坛,张贤亮率先突破了若干禁区,例如
描写性的《男人的一半是女人》。

Try to find someone who can help correct your basic pronunciations; pay one
if necessary. My spoken English was improved with an american friend's help.
Other feedbacks seem easier to correct if you pay attention to them.

I thought about this. we happen to have a ESL course opening for speaking
skills-accent reduction etc. But I have time conflict with that course. Is
there any free on line material that helps reduce accent?, pronunciation?

update:
another faculty member asked to meet me again this morning. They took it
very seriously as students went to the professor who is in charge of
teaching at the first day when I even didn't teach but only went through the
syllabus.
1. No teaching assignment next semester if I didn't improve my teaching
evaluation dramatically.(It's a failure signal to me. Although I am not the
one with worst evaluation but it seems I have the most complaint?)
2. request me to devote much more effort in teaching. much much much more.
3. Attending the workshops offered to PHD students and the assistant
professors.
They repeatedly tell me students pay for more than $50K to attend the school
and we need to satisfy their need.
It sounds like I will fail the job market, I have no future if I can't
handle those students/Teaching.
Is it not my thing at all? Or do I indeed have a lot of room to improve?
There are major complaints not easy to solve:
1.no passion. speak in a monotonic tone.........I thought this is what born
with. How could I convince the students that I don carry enthusiasm but not
delivered by my voice or tone?
2.Language barrier. it comes up over and over again. Is it possible for me,
who is doing busy research, plan to go to job market, and have a 10 months'
old baby,to reduce the accent and improve the communication skills
significantly in a short time and within an managable time frame?
Gosh. I feel so depressed.
More questions: I always want to cry when they talk to me with such a tough tone: failure or success, you choose! if you don't like what you are doing, your life will be miserable.blahblahblahblah. if no improvement in teaching, no job market available!blahblahblah
Am I not mature or didn't hear enough honest comments before?

我觉得你的英文写的很流畅!
大声讲话比较重要,我上过几节语音课,还是有些小技巧的,比如"夸大"重音和爆破音
啊什么的,这些技巧应该不需要太长时间就能掌握。很多地方都有vocal tutor,不学唱
歌,学学怎么有效发声就好。
信心也很重要,你们系里的人不是很会从正面鼓励人,必要的时候脸皮得厚点儿,屏蔽
不利信息哈。我只教过低年级本科生,我觉得有时候需要降低对学生的期望和课程难度
。很多时候,特别绕的东西学过就忘了,也没啥用,你还费力不讨好。有用的基本的东
西他们理解了就行了。可以给点儿难的问题让有兴趣的自己想。

作为刚过来的人(现在第三年教书),我觉得:
1、低年级的课程不要讲得太深,除非学生追问。大部分都很笨的,要记住这点。
2、大声。我的学生经常说在隔壁都听得到我上课。你大声,带点抑扬顿挫,学生就觉
得你passionate了。反正课堂上声音最大的那个应该是你,有时候一天下来喉咙都痛,
过阵就习惯了。
3、如果你的性格合适的话,多开玩笑,当然要把握度。如果学生笑起来,课堂气氛活
跃了,他们才不管学到多少东西,你就是好老师。很多年后也许他们根本不记得你教了
什么,但多半会记得你开的玩笑。

As for spoken English, if time permits, watch TV or listen to radio and try
to mimic their pronunciation. As others mentioned, your written English is
pretty good, so you may have accent but that shouldn't be a deal breaker.

谢谢各位。有时候真的觉得在美国真苦闷。我个人认为我要是回国教书也算是star
teacher了。我非常精心准备的我的课件,非常尊重学生,很希望他们能学到东西,希
望自己的effort得到肯定。我对学生非常fair,学生过来问问题我非常欢迎。真的没想
到我课还没开始教就有学生complain了。
有时候想想在这要比native speaker付出更多辛勤劳动也不见得很catch up,是不是太
不值得呵。我问这些教授们学生会不会有bias呵,人家说不可能,一点都没有!他们是
非常维护学生的。我的一个同学曾经抓学生作弊几次,都被判败诉,还有一次被学生告
physical abuse。(他抓住了学生拿材料的手。。。。)
心情很不好中

我妈不管我,没法子。我婆婆和我娘是一样的。我家婆婆连她女儿的月子都不想帮她就
想着过我们这边来。我娘只忙着和我哥一家子转悠,不会理会我的。
本来没打算请婆婆过来,自己俩扛一下。这下子扛不住了。向婆婆投降。

Take it easy.
It is tricky to get good teaching evaluation especially if you are not
confident. Students are smart and they can tell.
The key here is to make your students like you instead of complaining a lot
about you. But how to do it is very difficult.
In my personal opinion, try to make lecture easier, also introduce some
group discussion. For example, you can give a lecture for about 15-20
minutes, then ask them to have a group discussion or answer some questions
relating to what you have just covered. In this way, you will not be the
only one to worry. Instead, your students are.
Others, try to emphasize some topics while keep other topics as taking home
assignment, which also make your job easier.
In any case, you are the professor and you are the one knows most and there
is nothing for you to worry. Just relax and enjoy the teaching. In addition,
you can also introduce some videos from youtube whenever you are tired, or
ask students questions.
