Just got my 64 bit HP desktop (Vista Premium). I want to install my old
32 bit Compaq Visual Fortran on it, but in vain. Can anybody help me with
it?

这当然得看你是干什么工作的了。

装32位的XP/Vista，然后装Compaq Visual Fortran,但是你能用最大RAM只有3GB。
或者把Compaq Visual Fortran在XP上装成绿色软件，然后直接拷贝到Vista上用。但是
这样可能会影响速度。32位的Fortran还是不能充分利用内存，所以最好找一个64位的
Fortran。
反正不容易。祝好运。

That depends on what field you are in. If you are good at tuning
DB systems to run faster, you'll be hot.

install XP in a virtual machine, then install CVF there.
Otherwise, get Intel Visual Fotran for 64bit system.

Otherwise, get Intel Visual Fotran for 64bit system.

做这种类似工作的是不是很少，大约有多大比例。

In industry, people are pretty practical, if a system has good enough
performance, it's good enough. Otherwise, it's about profiling to find
out the bottleneck, then fine tuning above it.
A senior software engineer will find such need once a while, but
few job are dedicated on it. You'll find more of this kind of job
in research lab.

Every non-trivial project needs one. The guy has to be smoking
good and experienced enough, which is not easy to find.
