Just some questions about the ballroom dancing competitions.
What competitions are good for Amature Couples (beginner level) if I am not
a college student any more?
Can I still go to the College competitions? Are there other competitions that
i can go to?
Where can I find a list of such competitions? If a competition name has sth
like "Invitational" or :"Championships", does it mean anything?
What are the differences between USISTD, NDCA, and USA Dances?
I tried to do some research on line, but g

there're many competitions for amateur couples.
first off, almost all collegiate competitions are open to the public. so if
you live in the northeast region, there'll be many to choose from, such as
MIT OPEN. in fact, Harvard Beginner's Comp is coming up on Oct 28. if you
live in other areas of the country, just search for the ballroom teams of
nearby schools and see if they host any.
USA Dance as an amateur association has chapters and regional competitions
across the country. you can look on t

dancedance, thanks a lot for the answers.
Unfortunately, I live in the middle of nowhere, TX. looks like there are 2
college teams in the whole state, both at least 3 hours drive away, and it also looks like they
go to Northeast for competitions :(

how far away are you from houston or dallas or austin. i think there're
competitions in all three of them. but the amateur events won't be as large
as in the northeast. but they'll be good starting points.
where do you take lessons now? do your teachers have any recommendations?
you can always travel to bigger comps if you're truly dedicated:)

I am actually in the Dallas area.
I take lessons at a studio. There are pro/am competitions that my teacher
recommend, but they are sooooo expensive, and there isn't many competitors
in their 20's at all. I think one important reason is that they are too
expensive to afford.
So i want to look for competitions for amateur couples within driving
distance. Not that I have a partener yet. But I think if there are
affordable competitions with more competitors, and it is within driving
distance, it

Competition is never expensive, I think most of them cost about 50-100 bucks
to register, and cheaper for collegiate competitions. The expensive part is
the money for lessons and clothing.
I doubt the cost of lesson is the reason why not so many young people are
doing ballroom. I have come to the reality that the major portion of
ballroom population are students and retired people, both don't have
such responsibilities as career, family and children, so they have time
to invest, while other peop

I think College competitions and Amature competitions are not expensive.
but Pro/Am competitions seems to be terribly terribly expensive.
The competition package the studio quoted for me is nearly $2000, Even though it includes 2 days of hotel and 2 days of meal, it still sounds insanely expensive to me.
This is exactly why I want to look for Amature competitions in the area, but having trouble finding any :(

I agree that being serious in dancing requires a lot of devotion in time,
but what I meant to say is that the reason that the very small number of
competitors in the pro/am compeitions is due to the high price tag. I
belive events like MAC has a magnitute more number of competitors comparing
with the pro/am competitions.

Pro/Am sounds more like a money making scam to me. That's why I am looking
for Am/Am competitions. But being in TX, it seems to be difficult to
find local comps. And that is my reason to posting the questions here initially.

there are many pro-am competitors in this country, some of them doing it for
fun because they can afford it, but many for the love of dancing just like
us. they take it very seriously and practice hours by themselves.
pro-am is undoubtedly expensive, not everyone can afford it. but some
studios/teachers are more reasonable than others. you have to shop around .
prices need to be itemized so you know what you're paying for. ask to
arrange your own travel and meals and split the travel costs of yo

dancedance, Thank you for the very informative replys you gave.
Yes, I think people who are willing to spend such a large ammount of money
and time on their lessons and competitions must really really love dancing.
Maybe more than love, addicted I would say, just as I am now :)
For the pro/am competitions, there are two things that i am concerned with,
one is money, for my level right now, I'd rather spend those money on
lessons than a comp. But another very important one is that there aren't

if you have a partner who's as addicted as you are, you can travel to bigger
comps at your level too. that's what we do because we don't live in the
hotbed of dancesport either. other amateur dancers might compete every month
or every other month, we did two a year (later a couple more). and i have a
girlfirend who does 1-2 pro-am comps a year because that's what she can
afford. not ideal but it worked out fine

There may be more swing dancers than ballroom dancers in Dallas. Therefore,
it hosts one of the largest Swing competition during labor day weekend, but
the pro-am competition is relative small.
SMU dance club may be the only collegiate ballroom dance club, where you can
get in at $2-3 a class. You can find 40+ young beginner dancers there.
Ia/Raza, Sherena/Goche, Sergay/Michelle are popular teaching professionals
in the area and certainly there are 2-3 arthur murrays in town.
