Dear Mr. Ouyang and Ms. Ouchida:
Thank you for your thoughtful and respectful request that U.S. Figure
Skating reconsider its selection of Ashley Wagner as a member of the 2014 U.
S. Olympic figure skating team instead of Mirai Nagasu.
U.S. Figure Skating firmly stands behind its process, the Athlete Selection
Procedures for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, and the selections made
regarding the athletes nominated to the team. The Athlete Selection
Procedures used for the selection of the 2014 Olympic figure skating team
were reviewed and approved by the Athletes Advisory Committee of U.S. Figure
Skating, the U.S. Figure Skating Board of Directors and the United States
Olympic Committee.
With the stated goal in the Athlete Selection Procedures of fielding the
most competitive team for the Olympic Winter Games and, in accordance with
those procedures, the 35-member International Committee took into
consideration all eligible athletes and their participation, placement and
performance at the competitions listed below in priority order:
• 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Championships
• 2013 ISU Grand Prix Final
• 2013 ISU World Figure Skating Championships
• 2013 ISU Grand Prix Series Competitions (six competitions)
• 2013 ISU Four Continents Championships
• 2013 U.S. Figure Skating Championships
• 2013 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships
• 2013 ISU Junior Grand Prix
The placements at the 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Championships do not solely
decide who will be selected to the U.S. Olympic figure skating team. Under
the Athlete Selection Procedures, it is an athlete’s body of work at the
competitions listed above that the International Committee must consider in
the selection of the U.S. Olympic figure skating team. The figure skaters
who have been selected and nominated to represent the United States in Sochi
, Russia, are as follows:

Like the Chinese Alliance for Equality, U.S. Figure Skating firmly believes
in equality. Our bylaws clearly state that all athletes are to be provided
an equal opportunity to participate in eligible athletic competition “
without discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, age, gender or
national origin.”
U.S. Figure Skating takes very seriously any implied reference that there
was discrimination in the selection of the 2014 Olympic figure skating team.
We challenge any such implication, particularly given the fact that more
than 25 percent of our Olympic team members are Asian-American. Attached are
the Athlete Selection Procedures used in the selection of the 2014 U.S.
Olympic figure skating team.
U.S. Figure Skating requests that you share this response and the Athlete
Selection Procedures with anyone to whom the open letter was published.
