If you want free stuff, then linux+apache+mysql+php can do almost
anything. however, i'm not quite sure about how secure the server is.

suddenly remembered one thing.. you can pretty uch forget about
mysSQL if you want to do anything commercial. mysql doesn't
support cursors.. and has no row level locking.

SOunds like a solid database you need over there. if it is only a school project,
Linux + mySQL + perl is good enough. But if you want a good, solid system that
wont crash over night and can keep on going like the powered bunny, you better
grab Sun + Oracle + Oracle Web Server. :)

well. It also doesn't support triggers does it? It lacks a lot of features,
but it is hella cheap and small. :)

Oracle webserver is a software that transforms oracle stored procedures into
html pages.
Visit www.ei.org to see a oracle based web site.
Ei (the company I am currently working for) uses Sun+(who knows what webserver)
+Oracle.

recently did some spare-time work on the following setup:
Linux + oracle8i EE + Apache (with JServ servlet support) web server
using JDBC.
Worked extremely well on my laptop w/ 128M memory...

It's Enterprise Edition, the one with most if not all options.

I am waiting for JDeveloper 3.0, which supports JSP. Java Serverlet is
powerful, but not easy to develope a eCommerce site--You have to output
even each HTML tag in the servlet.
So, I think, at this time, PHP3/4 is better than Servlet.

I think it's more like picking the tool that best suits your need.
Servlet can be useful when you are intended not in serving HTML
pages (dynamic or not) but data (such as XML-encoded financial data)
which may have no HTML tags involved at all :)

I mean i need a JSP enabled web server. JDeveloper supports JSP, and
bundles a such server.
Apache Java module has an extension, named JSSI, but it is not a standard.
En, you have to output XML tags.
