Make a full backup every hour. Is it crazy?# Database - 数据库

Someone of my company scheduled a full backup each hour and diff backup
every 5 minutes using a sql 2005 third party VDI backup software, and
claimed it’s a recommended backup topology.
The backup files are on the same physical disk with the database data files
and grow 17 GB each day.
Any idea who may recommend such topology?

that must be storage vendor , EMC recommend such idiocy ?

oh, yeah.
It is EMC. I just got the response from the person who set up the backup
plan.
I have asked to stop the stupid backups immediately.

ha.. I guess they are really desperate these days with storage technology is
leaping forward while it is among those few ones without any filesystem
technology sitting on top of their storage racks. Other plays like Sun and
HP
all have the edge of selling products with persuasive file system based
technologies.

TMMD.
That guy stopped 5 minutes diff backup and keep the full backup each hour.
The backup files grow 6G in last 5 hours.

the fact that the file locates on the same disk as the data file just made a
hell of day for me!!

That guy said: “The backup being on the same disk should cause no problems.
All the virtual drives in this server are part of a RAID 50, 6 disk raid
array.”
What is RAID 50?

Raid 5 + Raid 0

problems.

since it is virtual disk resides on the big disk array, I guess there is
merit
to have the bkup lives on the same virtual drive. Still what a waste to have
hourly backup. Hourly incremental+daily maybe more appropriate , maybe dual
active(duplication) is better for your database if transaction volume is
high
24/7

problems.

For this kind of situation, why not consider Mirroring / Snapshot ?
avatar

The database is running on sql 2005 standard version.
Snapshot is not supported on the standard edition.
Mirroring has limited operating mode on the standard edition and it more
like an additional witness server.

just backup the log files every 5 mins if recovery is critical
and do nightly full backup, or twice a day at most.
and other than performance point of view, safty rules would against storing
the backup at the same location of the production data.

Stupid people are doing in the stupid ways.I said what I can say. And I did
what I can do. They just don't want the correct way.
The backup is still running. The folder to hold the backup files almost 35G
and grows 1.2G per hour, the available disk space is 60G.

disable the logon for the backup account, only open during night time for a
couple hours. . AS a DBa, it is either DBA's way or high way.. hahah...

did
35G

also, create a data file covers 90% of the disk space and tell the backup
folks to find somewhere else to store their data, backup living on the same
disk array / partition/virtual disk as data file is definitely NO.

damn, that's really sucks. have you guys experienced it takes too much time
for creating/rebuilding indexes?
