for small db without 24*7, cold backup with os command
for small db with 24*7, hot backup with os command
for big db, rman would be easier

1. shutdown database with "normal, transactional or immediate" option
2. copy data file, control file, log file using os command
3. startup database

For basic restore, rman is good and easy.
If DR, suggest using Oracle Data Guard
If DR, suggest using Oracle Data Guard
