I use cable modem, DHCP. One computer connected to cable modem at one time
only, no home LAN. My linux and win2000 boxes all work fine without a single
problem. But my laptop with winxp (home edition) doesn't. Two network adapters
on laptop, LAN and WLAN. What happens is whenever I start the automatically
obtained IP and gateway are automatic private IP addr, 169.xx.xx.xx. I then
disabled APIP by editing the registry keys, to prevent it from competing with
DHCP. Then it became 0.0.0.0. I tried t

Seems you do not have a home router.
I think the problem is that your desktop obtained an IPlease
from ISP, and MACaddress of the NIC is saved in the IP allocation table.
you will have to power of the modem for about 20sec till 1 minute
then power it on again then the modem may try to get a new IP lease
from the DHCP server. give it try and good luck.
