Here's the daily report from my son's kindergarten teacher:
"We began the morning by reading a book about President’s Day. From there
the children wrote about what they would do if they were president. Here are
some charming examples of their writing.
-If I were president I would make the laws. I would be a great
leader. And also help people. And also be a community builder. And
make it a great state! And I would have a hat.
-If I were president I would have tree houses everywhere. They would
be very high up. They would be electric. Then I’ll have a tube that
would go underground. There would be a secret room that would be
treasure there. Then I would make the world a better place.
-If I was a president I would go and get books for children and tell
them to read.
-If I were president I would make laws. And also help make the
country fair and safe! And also have a pet bald eagle. And when I
need to write notes to people I would write it and give the note to
my eagle and my eagle would fly to the person and give it to she or
he."
I asked my son what he wrote, he said:"If I were president, I will play
baseball and teacher others to play baseball.". This school is the best
school in the area with almost 50% white and 50% Asian. My son told me the
name one by one who wrote what for the quoted examples (they must all read
to the class), looks like all above examples are from white kids. You have
to say that writing is a natural weakness for Asian kids like him. Maybe
imagination and creativity too. The last one was written by a kid whose
parents are both lawyers, I have seen her other writing before and they were
at 2nd or 3rd grade level. Her parents didn't even send her through GT
testing procedure. I saw his father attended the info session of GT. BTW, I'
m not saying writing is an indication of IQ, as parents background,
bilingual, etc. all have effect on our kids. This just helped me realize
where the class is at for writing level and where my child's natural
weakness is at.
