A Cupertino businessman was arrested this week on visa fraud charges after
he allegedly made false claims that he was offering jobs to visa applicants,
according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Balarkishan Patwardhan was
arrested Friday after being indicted on Wednesday on 19 counts of visa fraud
, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag.
Patwardhan allegedly submitted false immigration forms and supporting
documents claiming that visa applicants had high technology job offers when
he knew that he did not have jobs for them, the statement said. Patwardhan
was released on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to return to court April 22.
The maximum penalty for visa fraud is 10 years in prison and a $250,000
fine.
