I am trying to replace a water pump, which seems to have a strange circuit.
There are 4 pins for this pump.
2 pins are power lines, 110VAC and ground.
2 pins seem to connect to the two ends of a capacitor, why? what is this for?

single phase induction motor. cap to generate 90 deg phase shift

that capacitor is to start the motor.

why not use the power line to turn on the pump directly?
