A strange water pump

I am trying to replace a water pump, which seems to have a strange circuit.
There are 4 pins for this pump.
2 pins are power lines, 110VAC and ground.
2 pins seem to connect to the two ends of a capacitor, why? what is this for?

single phase induction motor. cap to generate 90 deg phase shift
