中文翻译好象叫 "细粒度",经常用来描述对对象的控制程度. 具体意思看context了.
an example, suppose you have a processor and you wish to reduce the
power consumption. One way is to "turn off" when it is idling. The
other way does not simply turn it off but rather can adjust its
frequency and power supply voltage according to how busy the processor
is. so the first method is "coarse-grained" -- a binary/hard control, and
the second one is "fine-grained" -- a continuous/soft control.
