今天Webster的word of the day, 大家猜是啥：“brummagem”--意思是not genuine，
cheaply showy--show假货和便宜货的意思。。。。汗。ring any bells? 哈哈
我今天看见这个update，就觉得忍俊不禁。跟大家分享分享。词源解释是这样的，17世
纪的英国城市伯明翰（Birmingham)，以铸造假币闻名。很快的伯明翰成了假货的代言
地。19世纪，当地已经发展出了非常发达的便宜镀金首饰的出产地，于是Brummagem这
个词出现了，特指闪闪发光的发表却低劣品质的商品。
（ By the 19th century, Birmingham had become a chief manufacturer of cheap
trinkets and gilt jewelry, and again the word "brummagem" followed suit --
it came to describe that which is showy on the outside but essentially of
low quality.）
造句：Donald knew better than to pay good money for the brummagem watch that
was being falsely advertised as a quality Swiss timepiece.

but why brummagem is not used as often as knock-off or 山寨? Is it a word
that's kind of outdated?

我觉得镀金首饰比金首饰难制造，工艺更难，质量更高啊～

应该没有outdated，只是比较文邹邹。。。我subscribe了webster的application到
igoogle
上，每天都update。有时候词很文，有时候还是很常用的词。反正今天的词是这个，希
望webster的
工作人员紧追时代的吧：）

也不一定，纯金很软。打造起来要很小心
