This email showed up in my inbox a few days ago, and I think it's probably
worth a separate post.
When you see a stunning woman on the street, you need to realize that
without all the styling and makeup, she is probably an average looking woman
just like you. What makes her stand out is that she has spent a lot more
time and money than others in figuring out how to look her best. That look
didn't come free and easy. If you want to look stunning, you have to be
committed to a life-long learning process, because there is always room for
improvement. There is a huge amount of knowledge and know-how in attaining
an outstanding style. To acquire this knowledge and reach that level of
sophistication takes many years. 牌子,款式,颜色are only a small fraction
of it. You need to read more, think more, observe more, and try more. And
in this process, you will develop your own style that goes with your
personality. You can't rush this process. Also, you need to hang out with
better dressed people -- if you surround yourself with sloppy dressers, you
tend to dress like them.
When you observe others, pay extra attention to those who have a similar
physique as yours. If you're a 5ft4 Asian, don't imitate the way a 6ft
blonde dresses. But again, simple imitation rarely works well, and it's
superficial. What you really need is a sense of style, a general idea of
what is good and what is bad. To acquire that sense you have to resist the
temptation of following the current seasonal "fashion" and immerse yourself
in classic, time-proven looks. Maybe you should watch all the movies by
Grace Kelly, Liz Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Sophie Marceau, etc.,
so you can learn how beautiful women dress, move, talk, and carry
themselves. This might sound silly, but it's necessary. Nobody is
naturally born elegant and stylish. It's like learning a new sport or new
language.
Once you form your own sense and belief, shopping for clothes becomes very
easy. You will start to pay more attention to the cut, texture, color, than
brand names and other superfluous things.
You can't 全是凭感觉来, nor can you always have an idea of 具体想买什么.
But you should always have a general idea of what looks good on you. For
example, you should know what colors/shape to avoid. You should also
remember what's in the wardrobe, and think how a new item can work with what
you already have. For example, if you see a pair of shoes you really like,
before you buy them, you should think about what kind of pants/skirts/tops
would complete the entire look. And if you don't already have those other
pieces, you will probably never want to wear them (and if you do wear them,
they will look awkward on you). The daily shoe pic posted on this board are
a perfect illustration of how little people think about the complete outfit
when they buy shoes on an impulse.
I'd say pick your price range, and then forget about brands. Brands don't
make you, clothes do.
If I were you, I'd browse plenty of magazines/catalogs before hitting the
mall. If you just dive into the shops and browse blindly without a purpose,
you are very likely to end up with stuff that you will never wear.
