I currently a ph.d student at USA. A friend in germany want to invite me for a
visit. I plan to appy visa at houston with an invitation letter. Is it easy to
do that? I have not been to germany before. I will return after 10 days. If I
visit Leipzig, which city I should go to apply visa at US embassy at germany?

if you plan to renew your us visa in germany, then
it is nearly impossible.

you will need a schengen visa (a visa that covers many countries in europe).
You can apply for it at any german consulate/embassy in US. Do a google
search to find one closest to you.
However, to apply for schengen visa, you will need to have a valid US visa
(for your return). If your current visa has expired, you will need to renew it
first. This may be a pain.
