but usc is not in a good place in LA.
the surrounding is terriable.
i think this 2 school's EE are at same level.
but the environment difference is huge.
so i think UW is better place to go for overall considering.

I have been to USC for twice, some black and latino areas
around it
but it's okay
quite safe and campus life seems to be exciting
UW used to be good, but recently I often see reports talking about
seattle's going down
don't know how seattle is now, last time I went there was more than 3 yrs ago

as to EE's job market
orange and north CA provide more opportunities
LA is also an exciting city
but going to seattle is good for your oral english, hehe
too many chinese in LA
this is the only aspect that I dont like LA
As to transportation, if you are familiar with LA's transportation system
you wont suffer alot.
And seaview, disneyland, universal studio, san diego etc etc can
give LA enough confidence to beat seattle's trees, let alone
the sunshine in southern CA

As to living conditions, maybe UW is better.
As to general reputation, USC is a little better.
But the boss is the most important of all.
UW has better scenary, but USC has more diversity and fun.
Personally, I would choose USC if advisors are similar.

USC EE is very famous for the digital communication, the optical device is
also good. And USC is rich, I got more than 1500 when I was there.
LA is not as exciting as you expected. Universial Studio is once for all, I
used to have an annual pass, but only go with visitors. Beach and sunshine are
good. Driving in LA is demanding, and the people are not so nice. This is
typical for metros. Central LA is notorious. You need to find a apt in a very
restricted area north to USC to be safe. You could
also good. And USC is rich, I got more than 1500 when I was there.

public rankings, such as US news or Business Week etc...
Because ....Think about what kind of persons come to b-schools.

at least, I know in some universities, one departments of b-school have less
than 6 faculty member, but still they are ranked in top 25.

because many UW CS professors actually are employee of MS research there, but
they also hold position at UW CS. Sometimes I am really confused which job is
their main jobs....Because on their papers, their affliations are both.

BTW, UW nano center just landed 5 million out of 70m for the national network
of nanotechnology research last winter, and the projects will focus on
interface between nanoscience and biomedicine.

5 million is not a big deal at all for large research fund.
Comparing individual funding is too small thing.
for example, new NSF-ERC BMMES at USC is awarded $17 million, and new USC
Computution biology project is also about 17 million, center of Department of
Homeland Security is awarded more than 10 million etc.. all in 2003...

UW for sure.
I don't know USC is strong in your field. UW has a huge nanotech center.
I've been doing the so-called nanotech for years. USC is no-name in this
field.
By the way, which dept did you graduate from?
