It depends on what you want.
If you want academic work, definitely go to U Chicago. The phys, Math, Ecom
are among top in the world. U Chicago,(and Princeton, Harvard, UCB) are not
for everyone.
If you know you are not a science geek, and you want a job in industry, you
may pick USC.
How much Mike Williams will make if he goes to NFL this fall, and how much OJ
made though he lost all his fortune in that law suite.
I believe we chinese need to start to appreciate the telants in the other
field. I

chicago's environ't is good expect for the cold weather in winter
chicago本身就是个很大的工业城市
而且不像detroit开始没落
chicago 北部IL范围内有更多的公司
机会很多的
记得有美国主要城市公司排名和州内公司排名
你可以查一查
去industry location很重要

Detroit? Hehe, didn't you see what happened to the Big Three?
Detroit is the heart of the US automotive industry and unfortunately
this industry is dying. It definitely hurts U Michigan to some
extent though not that obvious. At least, if the Big Three are
not making money, the Michigan government won't have that big
a budget to support Umich.

大学私有制是不是真的比公有制有效啊

Do you know there is a University in Carlifornia called Berkeley? It is
public.
I feel that the location of the universities are very important. Like in
China, all the Universities in rich places are rising. (Zhejiang Da Xue, for
example.)
Another important thing is tradition. Like Oxford and Cambridge, and many
other European universities, they are as good as if no better than Havard
Princeton, blah, blah, in many areas.
In this country, the faculty in good universities are from Berkeley, Havar

The two shcools ranking strength are really close, I guess.

我也觉得USC先打败UCLA再说，都是一个地方的
隔那么老远和中部的芝加哥较劲实在没必要
芝加哥和西北或者密歇根去打吧，呵呵

Again,
everybody know, phys and econ are strong items of UChicago..So, if you just
compare these two, uchicago is top no doubt.
But do you see many engineering professors who graduate from UChicago? at
least I didn't.
Not always USC academic placements are bad, it depends on majors.
AT least I know in 2003 all Ph.Ds from USC Annerberg school of communication
got academic jobs.

It remind me one thing about USC vs UCLA.
When recently Andrew Viterbi gave the gift to name USC engineering school. He
said something on the ceremony.( Viterbi obtained his Ph.D. at USC and had
been faculty at UCLA).
He said he finally found an excuse to explain why he was a faculty at UCLA,
because the UCLA EE professor recruited him at that time was also a trojan.
USC and UCLA are really fighting each other, not just "oral fighting" on
internet. You will see many T-shirts on USC campus saying

I do not anticipate so much heat here.
It's could be of some help to newcomers to this land when they pick school if
we can give some reasonable comments. No fighting on the ranking, that's
insane.
My suggestion is, take a school which meet youe need, ambition/capability/job
prospective/survival, etc. I will decline CalTech now because I knwo I will
fail there. However, when I was applying to school, I was desperate in getting
the top ranking school, though not have the luxury in picking USC or
