过去一年的基金损失惨重，居然还有1千多的capital gain。还得缴税，真是雪上加霜
，唉。
I have a 1099-DIV form from Fidelity. Its item 2a shows the capital gain
about $1k. Also, on its supplement information form, it says this capital
gain is subjet to 15% rate.
But when I used a tax software, the rate is 30%.
Can anyone tell me which rate I should use?

是什么好病，因为在医院待了20多天，我有些难受。。看着博客上还是我们一起去杭州
我帮他拍的照片，想想这么快就物是人非了。

there are two kinds of capital gains, long-term and short-term.
long term capital gain is taxed at 15% fixed.
short term capital gain is taxed at your regular income rate.
30% fixed tax rate only applies for dividends paid to non-US
resident investors. I don't remember the tax code about F1 students
though.

tax software is usually correct.
At 30% rate, it's likely that you are a non-resident alien.
Even if you are not, to get the 15% rate, it's two steps on the tax
form -- income tax rate first, then adjusted to 15% later. So it's
not that intuitive.

Thanks for the reply. It is true that I am a Non-resident alien.
Do you mean the rate for capital gain is always 30% for a Non-resident alien
?

Yup, except for a few very rare exceptions.
