X University is hiring this year (look for an official announcement as soon
as all the paperwork is complete) and we are debating whether or not to get
a hotel room to do our interviewing in. While the placement area is a
wonderful resource, it is not exactly a comfortable, quite place to meet
people. It is sort of like herding cattle down a chute for branding. So we
thought we would rent a hotel room to do our interviews in.
However, then it occurs that a bunch of men inviting a woman up to their
hotel room for an interview may actually make people feel more uncomfortable
. So, I asked some of the female faculty here and one suggestion was to
prop open the door, and make sure the interviewee's chair is near the door.
However, it seems to me that if you think something is so creepy that you
have to provide a clear means of egress, you are probably not making people
more comfortable.
I went round and round, and then it occurred to me that I could just ask the
XYZ folks what they thought. Moreover, if it does make people
uncomfortable then I could share that information and maybe help not only X
University, but other universities to make everyone feel more comfortable.
So, if you will please let me know what you think, I will repost the
comments anonymously next week, and maybe help make the XYZ community more
considerate.
