Just a thank you letter should be fine.
I really don't understand why some folks refuse to write a letter for other
people. It is a good chance to build up connections. If they do others a
favor, they will be appreciated forever, like DaobanID said.

Unfortunately I cannot write the requested letter, as I get too many of
these requests and it is now policy to no longer provide this service.
