Regarding the letter, I had a post doc who also approached me for such a
support letter. After reviewing the letter that his attorney had provided,
I was not able to endorse it. Basically, the claims were above and beyond
what I could confirm. I am not sure if your letter would be similar.
Also, it may be to your advantage to get the letter from your current
employer. What I can say about you would be from many years ago, when you
were a student, and before becoming expert in a given field
