I have a major concern of how to define my field. I am now writing to ask
for your suggestions.
Basically, my research work has focused on the following two areas,
1. Bioactive peptides in venomous cone snails (conopeptides or conotoxins),
particularly the isolation and characterization of novel conopeptide ligands
which can discriminate between closely related receptors and ion channels
and be developed for the treatment of neuropathic and inflammatory pain.
Conopeptides or conotoxins are neurotoxins. This part of work was mainly
carried out in China before 2011. I used many methods to investigate the
structure and function of novel conopeptides, i.e. biochemistry (biochemical
isolation of novel conopeptides), molecular biology (molecular cloning of
novel conopeptides), and neuropharmacology (toxicity measurement by animal
behavior observation, molecular target determination by electrophysiology).
2. The physiology, pharmacology, and biophysics of nicotinic acetylcholine
receptors (nAChRs) in the brain. The nAChRs are neurotransmitter receptors.
This part of work was mainly carried out in the US after 2011. The major
method I used is electrophysiology, a classical technique in the
neuropharmacology research. I also used some molecular cell biology
techniques.
The correlation of my two research areas is, most of the conotoxins I
characterized are inhibitors (ligands) of different nAChR subtypes.
The board definition of my field could be “biomedical science”.
But there are lots of good journals such as Science, Nature, and Cell that
can also be classified under the “biomedical science” category.
Compared to these top journals in the biomedical field, the journals I
published my work are too ordinary, with much lower ISI ranking.
If I define my field more specifically, that could be “neuropharmacology”,
and there are much fewer journals in this field. However, some of my
papers are published on journals that don’t belong to the neuropharmacology
field, such as Biochimie (the Biochemistry category) and Genomics (the
Genetics category). And I also reviewed many manuscripts for journals that
don’t belong to the neuropharmacology field, such as Toxicology Letters,
Protein & Peptide Letters, Neoplasma, International Journal of Nanomedicine,
etc.
Therefore, I would like to discuss with you how I should define my field in
all my materials. Your kind help would be truly appreciated.
