One big problem I had with EJB2.x was its deployment descriptor,
while EJB programming was standard, its DD was not. Thus EJB was not
really zero configuration between different vendors. All the IDE tools
lock you into some vendor. I wonder if this situation is getting better
with commence of EJB3?

If ejb3 is to make programming easy, no standard DD is a huge mistake.

well, it is true that ejb3 improved the easiness of programming, DD... well
j2EE is just a standard, implementatoin varies, universial DD is probably a
dream which never comes true.

If servlet DD can be standard, why not for EJB?

different vendors want their own market share, especially when you seen
database vendors provide their own implementation. the integrity of J2EE and
RDBMS platform just makes it natural to have vendor specific impl, servlet
is not quite so close to the persistence layer.

Almost all EJB vendors can use different DB in their deployment descriptor.
So all they need is a standard way to describe it. They can still have their
own implementation.
