I am interested in testing Lucene (open source crawler) on my VPS installed
with CentOS 5.1
I wonder how to build the Java environment first before installing Lucene. C
an someone here guide me a bit?

I think first thing to make sure is you need to have the JDK installed. Then
, you want to set the path (bash shell maybe) so that you can run "java ..."
command.
CentOS is a copy of redhat enterprise linux I think. For me, I don't use
Redhat series these days. Rather, I use Ubuntu, as it is easier to install/
upgrade new package.
For Redhat series, I think you can use rpm command to do install/upgrade?

I always recommend people to get the jdk packages from sun directly
instead of their distro's package system. It's only slightly more
complex to set up, but avoids many problems from the wrapper packages
